Pastor Joel A. Bowman, Sr.

alternate text Pastor Joel A. Bowman, Sr. is a native of Detroit, Michigan and a product of a Christian home. Pastor B, as he is affectionately called by the people under his care, accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at the age of 12. Pastor B received his Bachelor of Social Work degree (1991) and Master of Social Work degree (1992) from Wayne State University. He is also a graduate of Michigan Theological Seminary, now known as Moody Theological Seminary (1999). In addition, Pastor B has done post-graduate and doctoral work. He was licensed to preach the Gospel in 1994 and was ordained to the ministry in 1996.

In 1999, Pastor B received the call to pastor the Greater Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. He served in that pastorate for 2 years. In 2001, Pastor B became the founder and senior pastor of the Temple of Faith Baptist Church, in Louisville, Kentucky. In August of that year, the Temple of Faith was officially organized with 120 charter members. Also in 2001, through Pastor B’s visionary leadership, the Temple of Faith received the gift of her present facilities through a merger with the Bicknell Baptist Church. In 2003, Pastor B founded the Faith Helps Community Development Corporation (FHCDC) which is the non-profit extension of the Temple of Faith. Under the auspices of the FHCDC, the L. S. Cunningham Family Life Center hosts one of the largest food distribution sites in Louisville where hundreds of people are served, every week. Most recently, Pastor B founded African-Americans for Biblical Authority (AABA), an organization designed to equip African-American pastors and churches to communicate a biblical world view in a culturally relevant manner.

By profession, Pastor B is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field. As such, he is a civil servant with the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), providing mental health treatment to America’s military veterans and their families. Pastor B is also an experienced professional trainer and consultant. He has guest lectured at the University of Louisville’s Kent School of Social Work, as well as the Baylor University School of Social Work. Pastor B now serves on the Church Relations Council (CRC) at Campbellsville University.

Pastor B is a former board member of the North American Association of Christians in Social Work (NACSW), and previously served on the Board of Advocates for the Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University. Pastor B also served as the Dean of the J. L. Roberts School of Religion, an annual conference sponsored by the Central District Baptist Association. Pastor B is a free-lance writer, poet, voiceover professional, and “spoken word” artist. He is currently completing an anthology of his poetry entitled “Poetry Emotion: Poems from the Pages of My Heart”. Pastor B has the distinction of receiving the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, which is that of “Kentucky Colonel.” He has received this honor, on two different occasions (1999 & 2011), for his community service.

Pastor B and his wife, Nannette Mitchell Bowman, are the proud parents of 2 daughters, Kayla Michelle and Katie Malia, as well as one 1 son, Joel, Jr. (also known as J.B.).
